What is Block Height?

Block height is the measure of the number of blocks created on a blockchain before the completion of the next block. Block heights number the blocks from inception to the latest block. Each block is stacked on top of the previous one to create a stable and secure structure.

How Do Block Heights Work?

  1. Genesis Block: Every blockchain starts with a block called the genesis block. It has a block height of zero (0) since there are no preceding blocks.
  2. Sequential Increment: As new blocks are mined and added to the blockchain, their block height increases by one. The latest block will always have the highest block height.
  3. Location Identifier: Block height serves as a unique identifier for a block’s location within the blockchain’s history. Knowing a block’s height allows users to find and reference it using a block explorer tool efficiently. Blockchain explorers display block heights as one of the most important blockchain data.

How are Block Heights Calculated?

Block height is calculated by blockchain nodes based on the number of blocks added to the chain since its genesis block. The process of assigning new block height is as follows:

  1. Incremental Addition: As new blocks are added to the blockchain, each subsequent block’s height increases by one relative to the previous block. This creates a sequential chain of blocks with increasing block heights.
  2. Consensus Mechanism: Block height is maintained by the consensus mechanism of the blockchain network. Nodes agree on the validity of new blocks and their position in the blockchain, ensuring that all nodes have the same historical data of the blockchain and its current state.
  3. Verification and Consistency: Nodes continuously verify the integrity of the blockchain by checking the validity of each new block based on its height and ensuring that it follows the consensus rules. Any attempt to tamper with the block height or the order of blocks would be rejected by the network, maintaining the blockchain’s integrity.
  4. Network Consensus: The consensus mechanism also ensures that all nodes in the network agree on the current block height and the validity of new blocks. This consensus is achieved through various mechanisms such as proof-of-work, proof-of-stake, or other consensus algorithms depending on the blockchain protocol.

What are the Benefits of Block Height?

Block height serves as a key identifier within a blockchain, offering several benefits. Some of which are:

  • Blockchain Age: The current block height of a blockchain gives everyone a rough estimate of the age and how long it’s been operational.
  • Network Health: Block height can be used to estimate the rate at which new blocks are being added to the blockchain. This can be an indicator of network health and activity. If the block height is static after a period of time, the blockchain has come to a halt and there is a technical problem.
  • Transaction Confirmation: Knowing the block height of a transaction can help estimate how many confirmations it has received. The higher the difference between the current block height and the block height where the transaction was included, the more confirmations it likely has. This means the transaction was successful and has become immutable.
